State of South Dakota to offer rebates

02/17/2010
The State of South Dakota recently announced an appliance rebate program available only to South Dakota residents starting March 1, 2010. The rebates are available on a first come, first served basis.

Rebates are available for the purchase of residential ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers ($100), refrigerators ($150), water heaters ($125), dishwashers ($75), and freezers ($150). Each household is eligible to receive only one rebate for each appliance type, and the appliance must be purchased on or after March 1, 2010.

To apply for the rebate, residents must (1) complete and sign the South Dakota Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Application Form; (2) attach a copy of the dated sales receipt for the qualifying appliance; (3) attach a copy of the recycling receipt, if applicable; and (4) mail the completed application form, copy of the appliance sales receipt, and recycler’s receipt (if applicable) to: SD Appliance Rebate, PO Box 1134, Pierre, SD 57501.

Application forms must be mailed back to the State of South Dakota within 30 days of the purchase date. Rebates take approximately 6-8 weeks to process.

Consumers are urged to review the list of current ENERGY STAR qualified appliances.

Refrigerator
To check for air leaks in refrigerator door gaskets, close the door on a dollar bill or strip of paper in several locations around the perimeter of each door. If you easily can remove the bill (or it falls out), the gasket needs to be adjusted or, more likely, replaced. Also perform a visual check of the gaskets, looking for breaks or deformed areas that may not be sealing properly—or traces of mildew that indicate air leaks. Source: Iowa Energy Center.
